Urge India to stop ‘human safaris’

© Survival

Tourists to India’s Andaman islands are using an illegal road to enter the reserve of the Jarawa tribe in the hope of ‘spotting’ members of the tribe – treating them like animals in a safari park. Shocking videos show the Jarawa being ordered to dance by policemen. Please e-mail the Indian government asking them to close the road and stop the ‘human safaris’ now.

Dear Shri Munda and Admiral Joshi,

I am extremely concerned about the Jarawa tribe of the Andaman Islands. Every day hundreds of tourists travel along the Andaman Trunk road in the hope of ‘spotting’ members of the Jarawa tribe – treating the Jarawa like animals in a safari park. The Supreme Court of India ordered in 2002 that the road should be closed, yet it remains open. I urge you to ban tourists from travelling on the road through the Jarawa's land and ensure that they use the alternative sea route instead. I also urge that the Jarawa be allowed to make their own decisions about their future, in their own time.

Yours sincerely,
